Baked oats have become a popular option thanks to their warm, flavourful, and filling nature – perfect for keeping energised in chilly weather. While traditional recipes often require baking the wholesome oat mix in an oven until it attains a cake-like texture, a fan of baked oats has offered a novel approach using an air fryer.

Shared on the Reddit thread r/goodrestrictionfood by the user ‘gardenfaiiri’, they claim to have “perfected” the method for air fryer baked oats. Commenting on their culinary creation, they posted: “My oats this morning were cranberry and toasted almond. Baked oats are my favourite breakfast at the moment!”

They added that the beauty of these air fryer-baked oats lies in their versatility; you can tailor them with a variety of ingredients.

Air fryer baked oats recipe

Ingredients

  • 30g rolled oats
  • 50ml milk
  • 50g banana
  • 1/4 tsp baking powder
  • A pinch of salt
  • Cinnamon

The recipe provided on Reddit includes the idea to “Mix in berries, nuts, chocolate chips or dried fruit,” and to sprinkle these components over as topping, enriching the bake with extra milk, nut butter or yoghurt either before or after cooking.

Method

  1. To prepare the dish, simply begin by mashing a banana in an ovenproof container that fits within the air fryer. Combine the dry constituents (oats, baking powder, salt, and cinnamon) and protein powder if desired, reports the Express.
  2. Then, incorporate milk to blend everything into a dense paste. Next, add your chosen mix-ins such as nuts, chocolate, dried fruit, berries, nut butter, or yoghurt.
  3. After one final stir, place the bowl in the air fryer and set it to 180C, letting it cook for 10 to 15 minutes.
  4. The Reddit user claims that using the “bake” function on an air fryer “works the best”, although it isn’t crucial. They recommend vigilance post 10-minute mark to prevent overcooking your oats.
  5. Typically, most baked oats using their recipe should be ready in roughly 12 minutes, depending on the mix-ins you choose. After cooking, let the oats stand to cool for a short while then finish off with your choice of extra toppings before digging in.
