PHOENIX (KPHO/Gray News) – A senior dog has found a new home months after they were rescued from a canal in Phoenix, Arizona.

The 10-year-old Chihuahua mix, now named Dorothea, was found on June 16 lying on top of a submerged shopping cart in the middle of the canal.

A good Samaritan had spotted Dorothea and alerted the Arizona Humane Society, according to their press release. One of their emergency medical technicians responded, along with crews from the Phoenix Fire Department.

After devising a plan, responders were able to get her to safety. Her rescue was caught on camera and released by the humane society.

The technician said Dorothea was scared, dehydrated, hungry and covered in ticks when she was rescued.

She was then taken to an animal hospital and examined further, where veterinarians also found a couple of fractured teeth that would need to be removed.

Dorothea was then treated to a spa day and spent time recovering at a shelter.

The humane society said they don’t know how long Dorothea was in the canal or how she ended up there. But what they do know is that her story “highlights the lifesaving work” the humane society does with the support of their community.

Dorothea has since been adopted. The humane society reported she is “living her best life” with a family in Youngtown, Arizona.
