If your clothes aren’t coming out as clean as they should, or if your washing machine is acting up, you might be unaware of a secret section that needs attention.
Our washing machines are constantly in use. While many are clued-up on the need for a rinse cycle with soda crystals or white vinegar, a surprising number remain oblivious to the filter compartment’s existence, leaving them baffled.
The filter compartment, often tricky to locate, requires regular cleaning to extend the life and enhance the function of the washing machine.
A property guru from Select London recently took to TikTok to demonstrate how to properly maintain this household essential as reported by in the Mirror.
To begin, the expert places a towel beneath the appliance, then proceeds to open a hatch at the bottom front of the washing machine. This reveals the filter compartment, which must be opened and cleared out.
She explained: “As soon as I open this you’re going to see the water gushing out. […] Please be warned, it will stink because you’ve got all the dirt that’s been collecting underneath and as you can see right now, as my example, we’ve got hair bands, all kinds of other stuff that you’ll find in there.”

First, she utilises antibacterial wipes to cleanse the drainage area. Following that, she brings the filter to the sink and scrubs it with washing up liquid before rinsing and reattaching it.
The revelation that such a compartment existed and required cleaning was a surprise to many. “I didn’t know you had to do this,” one individual admitted.
In a subsequent video featuring the same ‘trap door’, a viewer expressed gratitude: “Thank you for reminding me to clean my grandma’s filter. She didn’t know it needed to be cleaned, [and it] was 2 years ago [that] I cleaned it,” while another confessed: “I’ve had my front loader for years. Never done this.”
