Now that October is over with, the Christmas season can truly begin.

The festive period is beginning to ramp up, and people all around Scotland will already be looking ahead to December 25. However, Christmastime doesn’t really feel like it has begun until the cities, towns, and villages across the country switch on their festive lights.

With just a few weeks to go until winter kicks off in earnest, the Daily Record has rounded up some of the biggest Christmas light switch-on events happening around Scotland. While you will have plenty of time to soak in the neon glow, there is something special about being there the moment the lights are officially turned on.

Glasgow Christmas Light Switch On

When: November 17

Scotland’s largest city will kick off the festive season in style with its fabulous annual Christmas lights switch-on display. Taking place at George Square on November 17, the event will be hosted by Clyde 1 presenters George Bowie and Cassi Gillespie and will include live music, sing-alongs, a choir, and much more.

Edinburgh’s Christmas

When: November 15

This year, Edinburgh’s Christmas kicks off on November 15 — and will see the centre of the Scottish capital lit up in dazzling colours. Usually, the festivities kick off with an event called Light Night that sees the city’s lights officially turned on for the year.

Perth’s Christmas Light Switch-On Weekend

When: November 23-24

Each year, Perth dedicates an entire weekend to the start of the festive season. The Christmas Light Switch-On Weekend is a free and family-friendly event that features live performances, amazing street entertainers, and even funfair rides.

When: November 14

Every November and December, Aberdeen transforms into a massive winter wonderland. Featuring everything from a Christmas Village to a festive parade, the festivities will kick off on November 14.

Inverness Light Switch On Market

When: November 24

On November 24, the Eastgate Shopping Centre in Inverness will be hosting a special celebration in honour of the switching on of the city’s Christmas lights. The downstairs of the shopping centre will play host to a variety of stalls selling everything from food to art and homeware — all while the capital of the Scottish Highlands is lit up in a festive glow.

Stirling Christmas Lights Switch On

When: November 16

Christmastime in Stirling kicks off on Saturday, November 16, and visitors can expect a bombastic start to the festive season. Featuring everything from parade and pantomime entertainers to an appearance by Mr and Mrs Claus themselves, it is guaranteed to be fun for the whole family.

Dunfermline Big Light Switch-On

When: November 17

According to Fife Council, Dunfermline will be holding its annual Big Light Switch-On on November 17. The one-of-a-kind event will feature an artisan market, a funfair, a ‘Santa Dash’, and a parade, before capping off with the main event.
