A Los Angeles city bus was lit on fire and stores were looted as celebrations for the Dodgers’ World Series title got out of control.
Angelenos took to the city streets after their team’s dramatic 7-6 victory over the New York Yankees in Game 5 on Wednesday night. But while city officials said the majority of revelers were peaceful, cops reported several violent incidents on social media.
“A dispersal order has been issued at 9th and Flower due to an unlawful assembly and a hostile crowd that is throwing fireworks and projectiles at officers,” Los Angeles police wrote on X around 10:45 p.m. local time. “Leave the area immediately and follow all officers’ orders.”
Videos reposted by police showed several people leaving a boarded-up Nike store with boxes and tossing them into vehicles.
By the end of the night, a dozen people had been arrested, authorities said Thursday. Charges included failure to disperse, receiving stolen property and commercial burglary. No suspects were named in the destruction of the bus, which led to no injuries. Cops said the investigations would continue.
Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna said his department would remain on high alert through the next week, including during Halloween on Thursday, the Dodgers’ victory parade on Friday and the presidential election on Tuesday.
L.A. Mayor Karen Bass, while celebrating the victory and announcing Friday’s parade, also taunted New York Mayor Eric Adams, who initiated a friendly bet between the two before the World Series started.
“Shipping your Dodgers jersey first thing in the morning!” she wrote on social media. “Can’t wait for you to show New York City Hall that Dodger Blue!”
