Pupils from a Wishaw high school scooped the winners award at Lanarkshire schools public speaking competition.
The Lanarkshire Lieutenancy hosted a very successful ninth annual Public Speaking Competition for schools across the area, held at the historic Rutherglen Town Hall.
The event saw impressive performances from pupils representing Hamilton College School, St Aidan’s High School from Wishaw, St Maurice’s High School from Cumbernauld, and Uddingston Grammar School.
In teams of three, pupils delivered thought-provoking speeches on “Citizenship in Our Schools and Community” and skilfully responded to questions from their peers, showcasing an exceptional standard of public speaking and critical thought.
The judging panel, chaired by Former Lord Lieutenant of Lanarkshire Gibby Cox CVO MBE, included Marion White MBE, Director of fatBuzz Marketing Agency; Paul Cooney, CEO of The Kiltwalk; and Rt Hon Adam Ingram, Retired MP and Government Minister.
Mentored by Deputy Lieutenant Linda McDowall, the St Aidan’s team scooped the prestigious winner’s trophy, with the pupils receiving their award from the Lord Lieutenant of Lanarkshire, Lady Haughey CBE.
Lady Haughey said: “Congratulations to all four schools; each pupil should be very proud of their outstanding contributions, as they were each a credit to their schools.
“Special thanks go to South Lanarkshire Council for hosting, the dedicated team of organizers and judges, and the education staff for making this event such a success.”
The Lanarkshire Lieutenancy extended its appreciation to all involved, particularly John McKenzie DL, whose dedication has ensured the competition’s continuing growth and success and to St Aidan’s HS for their excellent musical performance at the event.
