(CNN) – Giving birth to triplets, quadruplets or even more has become increasingly less common in the United States.
According to a report published Thursday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the rate of births of multiples in the U.S. declined 62% between 1998 and 2023.
The largest declines in rates were seen among mothers 30 and older.
The CDC said guidance around the number of embryos transferred during IVF is likely to be the cause of the decline.
Couples are more likely to have multiples in a single pregnancy when using assisted reproductive technology because their fertility treatments may involve transferring multiple embryos into the uterus in hopes of resulting in a pregnancy.
Experts said there was a rise in the incidence of multiple births as fertility treatments because more mainstream after the 1980s.
