(CNN) – It’s the time of year to fall back and get an extra hour of sleep. Daylight saving time ends Sunday at 2 a.m.
Daylight saving time runs from the second Sunday in March to the first Sunday in November.
The idea has been to maximize the use of more daylight hours in the spring and summer months and save on energy consumption, but the practice has its detractors.
Lawmakers both at the local and federal levels have pushed over the years to make daylight saving time permanent.
The Senate in 2022 approved a measure to make daylight saving time permanent, but the bill never came to a vote in the House.
Dr. Chafen Watkins Hart with National Jewish Health says the time change can be hard on everyone, but can be especially difficult for children, older adults and early birds who avoid going to bed later.
“We see higher rates of workplace safety accidents per se in the fall when people become sleep deprived because they’ve stayed up later, but woke up at the same time,” Hart said. “We also see a lot of mood changes and higher rates of depression.”
Hart says to start delaying mealtimes and bedtimes by about 15 to 30 minutes leading up to the time change to prepare your body for the shift.
