The acclaimed film The Shawshank Redemption is scheduled for a television broadcast this weekend, offering fans another opportunity to enjoy the 1994 prison drama.

The film will be shown on Sunday 3 November at 10pm on BBC Two, and those unable to view it at that time can also catch it on BBC iPlayer.

The narrative follows a banker who is handed a life sentence at Shawshank State Penitentiary for the murder of his wife and her lover.

Despite maintaining his innocence, he is compelled to endure a life behind bars, isolated from the outside world.

Over the ensuing two decades, he becomes embroiled in a money laundering scheme within the prison, orchestrated by one of the wardens.

The film boasts an impressive cast including Tim Robbins, Morgan Freeman, Bob Gunton, William Sadler, Clancy Brown, Gil Bellows and James Whitmore.

Frank Darabont, who later directed The Green Mile, The Majestic and The Mist, helmed the movie.

The film is an adaptation of Stephen King’s novel Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption, published in 1982.

Upon its release, the film was met with critical acclaim, with many reviewers lauding the story, performances by Robbins and Freeman, the soundtrack, and the screenplay and cinematography.

In 1995, Shawshank Redemption received seven Academy Award nominations, the highest number for a King adaptation at that time.

In addition to its nominations, the film won accolades at the American Society of Cinematographers, Heartland International Film Festival, and Hochi Film Awards.

It boasts an impressive 9.3 out of 10 rating on IMDB rating from three million reviews and tops IMDB’s list of Top 250 Movies, surpassing iconic films such as The Godfather and The Dark Knight.

The film has continued to garner adoration from fans over the years, with one critic on Rotten Tomatoes writing: “If this is a feel-good movie — and by the end it certainly is — then at least it challenges us to dig deep for those good feelings when everything inside those mausoleum walls is unrelievedly harsh and grey.”

Another critic added: “The Shawshank Redemption is both resigned and inspirational, grittily realistic and vaguely surreal, matter-of-fact and operatic. Somehow, these opposites are combined into a remarkably smooth and lyrical composition.”

The Shawshank Redemption will air on BBC Two and BBC iPlayer on Sunday, 3 November at 10:00pm.
