HOUSTON — Congressman Colin Allred is trying to pull off a Texas-sized upset over Senator Ted Cruz.
Cruz has attacked Allred on issues like border security. One emotional ad shows the grieving mother of Jocelyn Nungaray, the 12-year-old Houston girl who was allegedly murdered by two undocumented immigrants.”Alexis Nungaray blames you in part for her daughter’s death. If you could speak to her, what would you say to her?” KHOU 11 anchor Len Cannon asked Allred.
“Well, I am a father of two young boys. I can’t imagine anything happening to them. What I would say is, ‘Taking your grief and turning it into action is admirable, but I take issue with what Senator Cruz has done with that grief,'” Allred said.He claims Cruz would rather talk about what’s wrong on the border instead of fixing it. The senator voted against a $20B bipartisan border security bill this year, saying it didn’t go far enough.

Allred has also been criticized for his stance on LGBTQ+ rights. The Cruz campaign spent millions pointing out that Allred supported the Equality Act in Congress that bars gender discrimination in public places. His ads accuse Allred of supporting boys playing against girls in sports.”People opposed to the idea argue that transgender girls competing against other females is unfair, do you think it’s unfair?” Cannon asked.”I think a senator’s job is to deal with issues facing the country and state, not to find one single example out of a thousand out of a million and scaring people about that,” Allred replied.
Editor’s note: Cannon also interviewed Cruz a few weeks ago. You can watch extended interviews of both candidates on KHOU 11+. It’s free to download on most smart TVs.
