Dumbarton’s West Kirk is set to be sold, as the congregation merges with St Andrew’s and Riverside to form a new Dumbarton Parish Church.

The West Bridgend Church marked the end of an era with its final nearly new sale last weekend – as a host of items including furniture, electrical goods, clothes, bric a brac, shoes and more were all sold.

Worshipers have been gathering at the West Kirk since the 1700s, with the striking historic building – on the banks of the Leven – now set to be sold.

The Church of Scotland confirmed to the Lennox that money raised will then be reinvested within the community.

A spokeswoman said: “As part of a carefully planned four-year process, the congregations of Dumbarton West, St Andrew’s and Riverside have formed a union to become Dumbarton Parish Church. The newly formed congregation will retain the former Riverside Parish Church for Sunday worship and the current Dumbarton West building will be placed on the market in due course.

“Until the timescale for this has been decided it will remain in use for some activities, including one monthly church service.

“Proceeds from the future sale of Dumbarton West will be retained by the new congregation and will help support their future missional work within the community.

“We were delighted to welcome those who live locally and beyond to the last nearly new sale to take place at Dumbarton West.

“We would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who have served the church faithfully by running the event each year, as well as all those who have attended it. This year the proceeds will go to local charities.”
