A woman has died after being knocked down on a road in Lanarkshire.

Emergency services raced to Crossgates in Bellshill after the alarm was raised at around 9.30pm on Friday. Officers were alerted to a crash involving a silver Ford Fiesta and a female pedestrian.

Ambulance crews attended but the the 41-year-old pedestrian was sadly pronounced dead a short time later. The driver of the Fiesta, a 36-year-old man, was arrested in connection with road traffic offences and was later released pending further enquiries.

The road was closed and re-opened around 4am on Saturday. Officers are now appealing for information.

Sergeant Andrew Coutts said: “Our thoughts are with the family of the woman who died and enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances. We are asking anyone who saw what happened to get in touch. If you have dash-cam footage that could assist with our investigation then please contact us.”
