Grinning Brendan Rodgers reckons referee Kevin Clancy was right to show him a yellow card after the Celtic boss was left red-faced by a slip on the touchline.

It was a ruthless display by the Scottish champions as they demolished the Dons at Hampden to book their spot in the Premier Sports Cup final – and bring Aberdeen’s unbeaten streak under Jimmy Thelin to an abrupt end. A Daizen Maeda hat-trick alongside goals from Cameron Carter-Vickers, Nicolas Kuhn and Kyogo Furuhashi put Aberdeen to the sword – but it was clear on the touchline that Rodgers wanted to see more from his team.

Even with his side holding a 3-0 lead, the frustrated boss attempted to kick the ball back on the park – before taking an embarrassing slip on the touchline. Rodgers laughed off the trip after sarcastic cheers from the crowd at the national stadium – and was in good spirits about the incident post-match despite a wind-up from the pundits.

Following the tumble, the Celtic boss said was quizzed by Premier Sports presenter Connie McLaughlin on “where his studs were?” Rodgers laughed: “It’s a poor one. They’re Tom Fords…”

Former Hoops’ hero Charlie Mulgrew continued the jabs. He chimed in: “They don’t make Tom Ford’s with studs on them?”

Rodgers smirked: “I’ll need to find out! In fairness I was raging because we had given the ball away and we were a bit slow on it. It was a deserved yellow card. It was just the game, I wanted us to play that fraction quicker even though we were comfortable in the game at 3-0.”
