SUMTER COUNTY, Fla. (Gray News) – Authorities say a 1-year-old was found dead in a car outside a Florida middle school after a family member forgot to drop them off at day care.

The Sumter County Sheriff’s Office responded about 4:18 p.m. Friday to a call about a dead infant in a car outside South Sumter Middle School, according to a press release.

An investigation revealed the 1-year-old was unintentionally left in the car by a family member. Authorities say the child was supposed to be dropped off at day care, but the relative forgot about the child and went to the school instead.

The 1-year-old was found dead in the car later that day.

“This is a tragic situation and our hearts go out to the family of the child,” wrote the sheriff’s office in the press release.

Authorities say the investigation is ongoing in coordination with the medical examiner’s office and the state attorney’s office.
