Manchester United were unable to make it two wins from two under interim manager Ruud van Nistelrooy as they were held to a 1-1 draw with Chelsea in the Premier League.

After a sloppy first half at Old Trafford – which saw both sides hit the woodwork – the hosts took the lead when Bruno Fernandes converted a penalty after Robert Sanchez brought down Rasmus Hojlund inside the box.

But the Red Devils’ lead would last just four minutes before Moises Caicedo equalised with a superb volleyed effort from the edge of the box.

Chances fell to Alejandro Garnacho and Bruno Fernandes in the closing stages to steal a victory for United but both blazed over the bar.

The point moves Chelsea inside the top four, while United remain in 12th place.

Roy Keane: ‘This is an average United team’

Speaking at full-time, the former United captain told Sky Sports: ‘Ruben Amorim should have signed a longer contract. There’s a long way back for this team. This is an average United team, all the stats back it up.

‘We are repeating ourselves, we don’t know what we are going to get from them – it’s hit and miss. This United team, boring, might be a bit strong. At the end, it was a bit more open, but really disappointed – it was so flat. From the manager’s point of view, this team is way off it.

‘A really disappointing performance. United are a bit average at everything and they are not special. The lack of goals is hard to believe.

‘When you look at United, they play for moments. That’s nowhere near good enough for a United team.’
