When searching for a “healthy” drink, you might typically grab a smoothie, protein shake, or a green juice. However, research indicates that a particular hot drink might be more beneficial than expected—good news for those with a sweet tooth.

Just last month, scientists praised a key component of this drink for its flavonoids, which are celebrated for their powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

When consumed, it is believed to reduce bad cholesterol, thereby lowering the risk of cardiovascular disease or heart attacks, while also providing “potential benefits for individuals with insulin resistance or type 2 diabetes”.

Surprisingly, the ingredient in question is actually chocolate, reports the Surrey Live. And what better way to enjoy it, than in a nice cup of hot chocolate?

Importantly, Healthline clarifies that it isn’t just any type of chocolate but cacao – the raw, unprocessed form of cocoa. This distinction makes cacao a healthier option, offering potential benefits beyond what you’d get from regular chocolate.

Cacao products are often made with minimal or no added sugar, allowing them to retain their natural, rich flavour while offering a healthier alternative to traditional chocolate products.

“Cacao is a pure form of cocoa that’s generally less processed and more nutrient-dense than most other cocoa products,” experts at Healthline add.

“To create a nutritious hot chocolate beverage without high amounts of added sugar, add 1 tablespoon of cacao powder to a mug of hot milk of your choice. Top with a sprinkle of cinnamon and sweeten with a bit of honey or maple syrup.”

You can bag yourself a 250g packet of Naturya Fairtrade cacao hot chocolate powder on Amazon for £6.48. Alternatively, you can buy some at Holland and Barrett for £8.70, or Tesco for £3.00.
