A gripping new true crime drama has landed on ITVX, available for full streaming following its Sunday night premiere.
The four-part series has garnered critical acclaim, with Anna Maxwell Martin’s performance in the lead role earning high praise.
The drama is based on a chilling real-life story and follows Delia Balmer, portrayed by Martin, an agency nurse who enters into a relationship with John Sweeney (played by Shaun Evans).
Delia soon discovers John’s dark history and, after enduring a harrowing experience, she fights to piece her life back together to face him seven years later.
Viewers can now binge-watch Until I Kill You in its entirety online, where Martin delivers what many are calling the pinnacle of her career, alongside Evans’ hauntingly dark portrayal of the deranged murderer, reports the Mirror.
Critics have lauded the show, urging audiences not to miss out on the chance to stream all four episodes this week. For those who watched the live broadcast on Sunday, the series will continue with new episodes airing nightly until Wednesday, November 6.
Lucy Mangan from The Guardian was particularly captivated by the series, awarding it five stars and stating that Martin “delivers the best performance of her career”.
Her review notes: “Until I Kill You is an extraordinary portrait of survivors’ suffering. But there is no scurrying after sensationalism. The worst episodes are evoked, not lingered on.
“As well as providing a tribute to the depth of Balmer’s courage and by extension that of all those like her it is also a testimony to the banality of evil. It insists on the essential pitifulness not pitiableness of these men and the needs they serve. It is a magnificent treatment of a damnable, unending subject.”
Jasper Rees at The Telegraph echoed this sentiment, penning: “Anna Maxwell Martin is superb as the courageous Delia Balmer.”
He further commented: “At its most impactful, the script by Nick Stevens (who wrote last year’s The Pembrokeshire Murders) has enlightening things to say about the psychological legacy of male violence.”
Sean O’Grady from The Independent also awarded the series five stars, labelling Until I Kill You as a “harrowing” and “compelling” drama.
“In the brilliant performance by Maxwell Martin, Delia remains defiant but unhealed by a kind of survivor’s anger, rather than guilt,” he observed.
The first instalment of the drama also garnered a strong reaction from ITV viewers tuning in from home.
“Until I Kill You….just binged the 4 parts…wow!” one viewer exclaimed on X (formerly Twitter). “Absolutely captivating, Anna Maxwell Martin gave such a convincing performance. Brilliant and heartbreaking.”
Another viewer shared: “I’m going to resist the urge to binge-watch this. Brilliant acting by Anna Maxwell-Martin and Shaun Evans, chilling to think that this is a true story. There are women who are going through this nightmare every day.”
Have you got the nerve to sit through this intense true crime drama?
Until I Kill You continues nightly at 9pm on ITV1 until Wednesday, November 6. All four episodes are available to stream on ITVX.
