Children and families in Motherwell have celebrated the opening of a vibrant new steelworks-themed play area on Roman Road.

The play area was officially opened by Cathedral Primary School pupil, Cerys Lambert, whose creative design won the “Design-a-Sign” competition, now featured proudly at the entrance to the park.

The project, developed by North Lanarkshire Council’s Community Partnership Team in partnership with local resident Joe Wemyss, pupils from Cathedral Primary and Muir Street Primary, and the Lanarkshire Deaf Club, pays tribute to Motherwell’s rich steelworks history.

The park’s unique design incorporates imagery inspired by the steel industry into both the play equipment and ground surfaces, blending heritage with fun and activity.

Attending the official opening, Councillor Geraldine Woods, Convener of the council’s Communities Committee, said: “This fantastic new facility not only provides a safe, fun environment for our young people but also celebrates Motherwell’s proud industrial heritage.

“Seeing the creativity and involvement from our local schools and community groups shows the strength of our community spirit.”

The playground offers a range of exciting features, including a Steelworks multi-play unit, an accessible roundabout and trampoline, sign language boards, and a variety of swings, including a basket swing and rollrunner.

For adults and families, new picnic benches have been installed to provide a comfortable seating area.

Funded by £140,000 from the Local Development Programme and the Scottish Government, the project was managed by the council’s Community Partnership Team.
