Ally McCoist reckons Steven Gerrard WOULD be welcomed back at Rangers – but issues run ‘far deeper’ at the Ibrox club.

Philippe Clement has been feeling the heat from the Light Blues faithful with his side sitting third in the Scottish Premiership and trailing Celtic and Aberdeen at the league summit by nine points after just ten games. He helped his cause at the weekend as he booked a Premier Sports Cup Final spot against Brendan Rodgers’ men after his side came from a goal behind at the break against Motherwell to win 2-1 in Glasgow’s south side.

But the Belgian is a man under pressure as he bids to turn fortunes around and put a real run of form, consistency and performances together with Olympiacos to come on the road in the Europa League on Thursday night before Hearts at home ahead of the November international break.

Former title winning boss Gerrard is in a similar situation at his current club Al-Ettifaq in the Saudi Pro League as boos rang out with his nightmare continuing. Speaking on talkSPORT, host Jeff Stelling asked if the Liverpool hero was available and Rangers wanted to make a change in the dugout, would he be welcomed back in Govan and McCoist said: “He would be welcomed back. He won the title in his time at Rangers and he would be welcomed back.

“But I have to tell you Jeff [Stelling] the problems at Rangers go far greater than the manager at this moment in time and a lot deeper. I think they need to get things sorted at the top level before anything else.

“It works its way down if things aren’t right at the top. No full-time chairman, director of football or chief executive. There is none of that happening at this moment in time and that has to happen. I don’t care what anyone says, it must have an effect on the pitch if things are not good off it.

So in answer your question, would he be welcomed back? I think he would, yeah. But he clearly has his work cut out over there [Saudi] at this moment in time.”
