Netflix fans have threatened to ‘riot’ after a beloved series was announced to be ending.
First released in 2020, the action-adventure mystery teen drama Outer Banks quickly picked up a loyal following.
Set in a community in the Outer Banks of North Carolina, it follows the conflict between two groups of teenagers in search of a lost treasure.
It stars Chase Stokes, Madelyn Cline and Madison Bailey, among others.
The fourth season returned to screens last month, picking up a whopping 24 million views in just two weeks.
The season has been split into two parts, with the remaining five drop on November 7.
However, it’s now been revealed that while the series will be returning, it will end after season 5.
Ahead of the new episodes being released, series creators and executive producers Jonas Pate, Josh Pate, and Shannon Burke shared the news in statement.
‘Now, with a little sadness, but also excitement, we’re putting Season Four behind us, and are turning to Season Five, in which we hope to bring our beloved Pogues home in the way we imagined and planned years ago,’ they explained.
‘Season Five will be our last season, and we think it will be our best yet.
‘We hope you’ll join us for one more paddle out to the surf break.’
Although fans were excited to hear the show was coming back, there were mixed feelings too.
‘Final season? They better give us the wildest treasure hunt yet or we riot,’ Kollerkunzultz posted on X.
‘Bittersweet news, but ready for the grand finale! Let’s make this last season unforgettable,’ predz0rx shared.
‘I’m feeling so broken rn,’ jiara score added.
In their announcement about the last season, the co-creators also spoke about being inspired to write the series in 2017 when they came across a photograph of a group of teenagers at dusk on a beach.
‘At the time, seven years ago, it seemed impossible that we would really get to tell the whole five season story, but here we are, at the end of our fourth season, still chopping away,’ they shared.
‘The fourth season was our longest and hardest – but most rewarding – to produce.
‘The season ends with a feature length episode, which we think is our best, most powerful episode. We hope you feel the same way.’
The creators also told Tudum last season that they already knew what the final scene would be, sharing: ‘We’ve always known from the beginning what the last scene would be.’
Across all four seasons, Outer Banks have spent a total of 27 weeks in the global Top 10 English TV List.
