Americans will be heading to the polls today (November 5) to vote for the next President of the United States, including famous celebrities.
Kamala Harris and Donald Trump are neck and neck and the campaign has continued to escalate over the past few weeks with the candidates’ exchanges growing increasingly fiery.
The two candidates have been across the US campaigning for to get voters on there side – holding rallies in swing states, debating on policies and taking to social media to get their message out.
One thing in particular has been particularly prominent this election is the amount of celebrities endorsing the two candidates.
With a race this close, the right celebrity political endorsement can sometimes tip the scale.
What is a celebrity endorsement in politics?
Celebrity endorsement in politics refers to the phenomenon where public figures, such as actors, musicians, and social media influencers use their fame and influence to support the political candidates.
These endorsements can involve something as simple as a social media post to more involved acts such as public appearances at rallies, completely including themselves in campaign events.
When a celebrity endorses a presidential candidate, they can shape the publics perception of the vote as well as encouraging them to vote in the upcoming election. Additionally it can benefit the celebrities public image.
Celebrity endorsements have been happening in the US for a long time, going back to 1960’s with the Rat Pack – Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin – endorsing in the 35th President John F Kennedy.
What celebrities are endorsing Kamala Harris?
From pop stars to beloved actors. Here are a view famous faces that are taking to social media to show their support for Kamala Harris:
The Avengers
A creative clip was shared to social media by Hulk star Mark Ruffalo, as The Avengers assembled to show their support for Kamala Harris.
Mark Ruffalo was joined by Black Widow actress Scarlett Johansson, Captain America star Chris Evans, and Iron Man actor Robert Downey Jr – alongside actor Don Cheadle and British star Paul Bettany who plays Jarvis/Vision in the Marvel movies.
The Hulk star cited climate change, education and women’s reproductive rights among the issues voters should consider when heading to the polls.
Eminem
Marshall Mathers, better known as Eminem, attended a Harris rally in his hometown of Detroit, Michigan, in addition to former president Barack Obama.
The Real Slim Shady and Houdini rapper took to the stage telling the audience: “I think it’s important to use your voice. So I’m encouraging everybody to get out and vote.”
Beyoncé
Beyoncé recently made an appearance at a Democratic rally in Houston, Texas, in October, where she told voters “we need to sing a new song.”
She stated she was attending the event “as a mother” and not a celebrity, telling the audience she is: “A mother who cares deeply about the world my children and all of our children live in, a world where we have the freedom to control our bodies, a world where we’re not divided.”
Kamala’s social media team have continued to use Beyoncé’s song Freedom throughout the election.
Taylor Swift
The mega pop star first showed her support for Kamala in September, posting a picture of herself holding her cat Benjamin Button. The move was viewed as a dig to Donald Trump’s running candidate JD Vance after he said the Democratic party was run “by a bunch of childless cat ladies”.
Taylor took to social media telling her 284 million Instagram followers: “I’m voting for Kamala Harris because she fights for the rights and causes I believe need a warrior to champion them. I think she is a steady-handed, gifted leader and I believe we can accomplish so much more in this country if we are led by calm and not chaos.”
As well as Taylor Swift, other musicians have shown their support for Kamala – such as Madonna, Bruce Springsteen and Olivia Rodrigo.
What celebrities are endorsing Donald Trump?
Hulk Hogan
The famous wrestling star was one of the first celebrities to endorse Trump this political vote. The former WWE wrestler appeared at Republican National Convention in the summer and at a rally in New York last month.
Hulk Hogan took to stage with Trump, waving the American flag whilst his Real American theme song played. He has also posted multiple pictures on social media with the presidential candidate.
Elon Musk
The Tesla CEO and billionaire Elon Musk has shown his support for Donald Trump by donating $75 million towards his campaign. He has also made guest appearances at several trump rallies throughout the states.
He told rallygoers in Pennsylvania: “I think this election is the most important election of our lifetime. This is no ordinary election. President Trump must win to preserve the Constitution. He must win to preserve democracy in America. This is a must win situation, must win.”
Jon Voight
Angelina Jolie’s father Jon Voight is a life long friend of Donald Trump, and has continued to show support for him through various social media posts, promoting his followers to vote red.
Other celebrities who have endorsed trump include Parent Tramp actor Denis Quaid, YouTuber and boxer Jake Paul and Olympic gold medalist and reality star Caitlyn Jenner.
