Riot police with shields have been seen forming barriers in the Edinburgh neighbourhood of Niddrie after cars were attacked by youths throwing fireworks.
Specialist officers have been supporting local officers through the night with riot cops now pictured arrving at the scene in Niddrie this evening.
Footage from locals shows dozens of cops wearing helmets holding shields as they form a barrier on a street in the area. Riot vans have also been seen.
A helicopter is also supporting officers as as part of Operation Moonbeam.
Police previously urged the public to ‘avoid’ the Niddrie area earlier this evening. Niddrie Mains Road has been shut down between Duddingston Road West and Duddingston Park South.
A Multi-Agency Control Centre has been set up in Edinburgh to co-ordinate activities responding disorder on Bonfire Night. Chief Constable Jo Farrell has been visited the team there.
Police confirmed that intelligence had prompted the use of Section 60 of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act. This measure allows officers to stop and search individuals suspected of intending to cause harm or engage in disorder.
