Sir Chris Hoy has made it his mission to get more men checked for prostate cancer as early as possible.

And we back him all the way.

After revealing his shock terminal cancer diagnosis, he has now called for earlier screening for the disease.

Men over 45 with a family history of the disease should go and get tested – as should those of any age who have symptoms, says Chris.

And he wants governments in London and Edinburgh to tackle the issue.

SNP Health Secretary Neil Gray has already agreed to review the guidance around prostate testing.

UK Health Minister Wes Streeting has also agreed to look into the issue.

Chris is one of Scotland’s favourite sons. He is the country’s most decorated Olympian with six golds and a silver. He was also world champion 11 times.

His success on the track entertained us all and encouraged many to chase their dreams. He has now gone from being an inspirational athlete to an inspirational campaigner.

And all of this is despite the sad news about his own cancer struggles.

It shows how strong a character he is that he continues to work for the benefit of others while his own personal circumstances are so difficult.

Hoy’s activism will have encouraged many Scots men to get checked for prostate cancer.

If anyone can win this lifesaving battle for better prostate cancer screening, it’s our Chris.

And it could be that in the face of great adversity this great Scot will pull off his greatest victory yet – saving thousands of lives.

Cold comfort

Keir Starmer was spot on when he called on the SNP government to make the most of a massive boost to NHS spending.

Hundreds of thousands of Scots are languishing on waiting lists due to a lack of beds and staff.

Patients are struggling to access a GP quickly and the ambulance service has many challenges.

Latest A&E figures show the accident and emergency service is also facing a bleak winter. The official target is for

95 per cent of all patients in A&E being dealt with within four hours.

This was only achieved for seven out of 10 patients in September.

Little wonder expert Dr John-Paul Loughrey has called on ministers to review their winter planning urgently.

Scots will be heartened by the additional resources coming to Holyrood as a result of the Budget. But spending this cash to boost the frontline is essential.

Patients are being let down and they need a health service worthy of the name.
