It can be exciting – and worrying – opening a letter which came through the post.

We all know envelopes could spell good or bad news which leads us to tear through the letter without realising our strength. But did you know there’s a way to avoid ripping the paper? And it could mean you’re opening your letters all wrong.

Over on social media, one Instagram page showed a “genius” method to tear through an envelope – and it’s a huge time-saver. User @jeffandlaurenshow, who boasts 324,000 fans online, showed the trick in a recent post.

It shows a clip where a person is tearing one corner of the envelope flap, before ripping in a straight line down the letter. So basically instead of tearing through and possibly damaging what’s inside, you can slowly open it by using one side of the envelope.

The caption read: “Jeff is obsessed with this satisfying letter opening technique!” Since it was shared late last month, it racked up thousands of likes and comments. One said: “Brilliant.” While another added: “Are you kidding me? This is genius.”

And a third commented: “You have to rethink EVERYTHING.” Then a fourth chimed in: “I have indeed been doing it wrong.” Others, however, were quite puzzled as to how people haven’t thought about this method before.

Someone said: “I’ve opened my mail like this for years.” Then a second posted: “That is the opposite of satisfying. It’s just so wrong.” Meanwhile other social media users admitted to ripping through their paper every time.

Looking for more savvy life hacks? Previously, people were left embarrassed after only just realising a “secret” ketchup hack on social media. In the short clip, the caption read: “The secret Heinz doesn’t want you to know!”

It shows how using a fork can be very beneficial to squeezing out all the liquid from the packet. Start by placing the fork, then dragging it over to get “every last drop of ketchup”.

And the person in the clip seems to be rather pleased by their genius hack as they joked: “If you have very good control, you can aim it where you ever need to.”
