Co-op supermarket is recalling its own-brand lasagne due to a ‘possible health risk’ from undeclared allergens.
A batch of its ‘Irresistible Luxury Lasagne Al Forno’, with a use by date of November 17, 2024, may contain mustard and sulphites that hadn’t been declared on the label.
‘This means the product is a possible health risk for anyone with an allergy to mustard or intolerance to mustard and sulphites’, it said in a recall notice.
The Food Standards Agency advised: ‘If you have bought the above product and have an allergy to mustard and/or a sensitivity to sulphur dioxide and/or sulphites do not consume it.
‘Instead, dispose of the product. For a refund or replacement (subject to availability) please visit your local store.’
Mustard is one of the 14 major allergens, according to Allergy UK, the prevalence of mustard allergies is unknown in the UK.
It commonly cause hives and vomiting, but there can be more sever symptoms like anaphylaxis too.
People with a mustard allergy might experience swelling in their throat, tongue and airways, causing difficulty breathing, Anaphylaxis UK said.
They may suddenly start wheezing, or feeling dizzy, faint, sleepy or confused after coming into contact with mustard. It can also cause pale, clammy skin and loss of consciousness.
Anaphylaxis UK said: ‘In extreme cases there could be a dramatic fall in blood pressure.
‘The person may become weak and floppy and may have a sense of something terrible happening.’
In rare cases, an allergic reaction to mustard can result in death.
