A Spanish tourist who was left stranded in the Colombian Amazon jungle miraculously managed to survive by consuming just two things.
In what was meant to be an exploration of the stunning landscapes of the South American jungle, Esther Jiménez Romeu managed to lose her tour guide as she ended up becoming stuck in the unpredictable terrain.
The authorities launched a painstaking 48-hour mission to track down the 26-year-old and, despite unfavourable weather conditions, they finally managed to locate the missing tourist.
Despite suffering from exhaustion, the Spaniard had managed to maintain her health by living on just two things; water and oats.
Speaking about the young woman’s condition, a volunteer from the Civil Defence said: “She collected all the rainwater and was sustaining herself on oats with a little water; that was her diet. Despite everything, she had the strength to get out of there.”
And, speaking of her delight at finally making it to safety, Esther said: “I am happy to be back thanks to all the community that has been helping me (…) I didn’t think they would arrive so quickly; they are a wonderful team.”
What makes Esther’s survival even more remarkable is that her discovery was only made possible after she had managed to contact her friend in Norway from the depths of the jungle, who then in turn informed the Colombian authorities.
The local Mayor’s Office offered his gratitude to the local authorities for their tirelss efforts in finding the tourist, as he said: “Thanks to the tireless work of the relief agencies, we have managed to locate the Spanish tourist who was missing in the Amazon jungle’, reads the document.”
While there has been obvious joy in the news that Esther has been found, a search remains ongoing to try and locate her tour guide, Horacio Santana Flórez.
