Australian boxing icon Jeff Fenech has confidently stated that Mike Tyson only needs a single punch to take down YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul in their upcoming heavyweight bout.
The two pugilists are set to face each other on November 15 at the AT&T Stadium in Texas, with a crowd of up to 80,000 fans expected. The fight was initially scheduled for July but had to be postponed after Tyson suffered an ulcer flare-up during a flight. It’s been nearly two decades since Tyson fought professionally, his last match ending in defeat to Kevin McBride. Following that fight, Tyson retired in an emotional interview, a clip of which has recently resurfaced online.
However, the now 58-year-old did step back into the ring four years ago for an exhibition match against Roy Jones Jr. Fenech, who is not only Tyson’s friend but also served as his trainer for his final professional fight in 2005, has given some strategic advice to Tyson ahead of his return next week. Speaking to The Daily Telegraph, Fenech relayed his recent conversation with Tyson: “I spoke to Mike two days ago”, he said, reports the Mirror.
“I just told him what I think he should do – don’t punch with him [Paul], don’t punch at the same time as Jake Paul. Just make him miss and make him pay. It could be over in 40 seconds if he lands one punch”.
Since the announcement of the fight, there has been widespread concern for Tyson’s health due to the significant age difference between the 58-year-old and ‘The Problem Child’. However, Fenech, a long-time friend of Tyson, believes the boxing veteran is in excellent shape.
“You don’t lose that power, and his greatest attribute was being able to make someone miss, then make them pay”, he added. “He’s 58, but he looks amazing and he sounds good he’s confident. It made me really happy”.
In a recent chat with Mirror Fighting, Fenech predicted that the social media sensation will be in for a shock when he experiences Tyson’s power firsthand. “Jake Paul doesn’t have the skill, the boxing knowledge”, he said.
“I’ve watched him but anyone can punch a pad or a bag or someone who really can’t fight. When you’re bigger and you’re stronger, that’s all good.
“But Mike, as a heavyweight, was a great defensive fighter. He could slip and make people miss. If he does that and lands a counter-punch, then the fight is going to be over.
“There’s not a chance in the world Jake Paul can take a Mike Tyson hook, a Mike Tyson right hand or a Mike Tyson uppercut. That’s what I’m hoping [for]. I love Mike, he’s a great friend, he’s like family to me. I just hope everything goes well”.
