AUSTIN, Texas — On the campus of Howard University, Vice President Kamala Harris delivered her concession speech in the 2024 presidential election on Wednesday.
Harris hoped to make the university the sight of her victory speech, but ultimately congratulated President-elect Donald Trump on his victory over the phone.
The vice president spoke to supporters for about 13 minutes, thanking them for their trust and encouraging them to continue fighting for their vision of America.
“The outcome of this election is not what we wanted, not what we fought for, not what we voted for,” Harris said. “But hear me when I say … the light of America’s promise will always burn bright as long as we never give up and as long as we keep fighting.”
Harris also acknowledged the difficulties around running her presidential campaign in just 107 days.
“I am so proud of the race we ran and the way we ran it,” Harris said. “We have been intentional about building community and building coalitions. Bringing people together from every walk of life and background, united by love of country, with enthusiasm and joy in our fight for America’s future.”
Harris preached a message of optimism on Wednesday, despite her warnings about a second Trump presidency on the campaign trail. Trump appears to be on track to win the popular vote for the first time in his three campaigns.
Harris also said she and President Joe Biden will ensure a peaceful transition of power, a “fundamental principle of American democracy.”
“That principle … distinguishes democracy from monarchy or tyranny and anyone who seeks public trust must honor it,” Harris said. “We owe loyalty not to a president or party, but to the Constitution of the United States, and loyalty to our conscience and to our God.”
Biden reacts to Trump being reelected
The White House has already extended Trump an invitation to meet with Biden and Harris soon. Biden is expected to address the nation on Thursday but praised Harris after her concession speech.
“Under extraordinary circumstances, she stepped up and led a historic campaign that embodied what’s possible when guided by a strong moral compass and a clear vision for a nation that is more free, more just, and full of more opportunities for all Americans,” Biden said in a statement. “Her story represents the best of America’s story. And as she made clear today, I have no doubt that she’ll continue writing that story.”
