ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ) – Here in Virginia, there’s always another election on the horizon.
And Tuesday’s results cleared the deck for the next big political fight in the Commonwealth: the race for Governor in 2025.
Gov. Glenn Youngkin can’t run for a second consecutive term, but others are lining up and stepping out in the race to replace him.Republican Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle Sears drew a rousing reception during Donald Trump’s rally Saturday in Salem. And former Congresswoman Abigail Spanberger was part of the program as Democrats gathered in Richmond Tuesday night.“Well, it certainly would be very historic, first of all, to have two women running for the office representing the parties,” said WDBJ7 Political Analyst Dr. Bob Denton, “and certainly it would end up being the first woman for a potential Governor of Virginia and also potential of the first woman of color to be Governor in Virginia.”Denton said Gov. Youngkin has reenergized Republican prospects in Virginia, and in a year when we won’t have a presidential election, he said all signs point to a competitive race.“I think that both of them are very good campaigners. They’re very good on the stump. They’re very good having the experience. And I think they will be very viable candidates without question,” Denton said.
Sears and Spanberger have announced their campaigns, but it’s possible, perhaps even likely, that other candidates will join the race before the nominations are decided next year.
