A chip shop is selling meals for just one penny for just four days.
The Island House, in Shard End, Birmingham, is offering the deal on chippy classics, such as fish and chips, chicken and chips, kebab meat and chips, and sausage and chips.
Customers began queuing up from 11am Wednesday to get their hands on the cheap meals which usually cost between £3.25 to £6.95.
Other chip shops have offered similar deals previously but restricted to just fish and chips – resulting in The Island House being branded the ‘cheapest in Britain’.
And when the first 200 portions have been sold, the takeaway increase the prices of the same menu items to £1 or £1.50 for the rest of that day.
Hairdresser Michelle Growcott, 65, of Shard End, was first in line with her brother Mick, 64, and thought the offer was a joke at first before sending her brother to see if it was true.
She said: ‘I thought it was £1 which would have been cheap enough but I couldn’t believe it when the man behind the counter said it was a penny. I thought he was joking.
‘We both had fish and chips and it was really lovely – the fish was fresh and the chips were really crispy. I don’t think fish and chips was even a penny when I was a young girl.’
Estate Agent Jay Brennan, 22, said the cost was ‘bonkers’: ‘I had to get down here to try it. I thought the quality might suffer because of the price but it was the opposite and a really good standard.’
The chip shop will be selling 50 portions of each meal at 1p and then £1 for the rest of the day.
The same offer then resets the next day and runs until Saturday, November 9, to mark the opening of The Island House’s new branch in Shard End.
Theo Kyriacou, co-owner of The Island House, said: ‘We obviously lose money but it’s about letting people know we’re here and what we’re all about. Hopefully they like the food and come back.
‘We’ve seen places offer similar before on fish and chips – but we’re doing it with fish, kebab meat, chicken and sausage and chips.
‘I’m not sure if we’re the first to do anything like this but we may well be the only ones idiotic enough to do so.’
