A professional dog trainer has shared the top three hardest breeds to train – but some say he’s missing a few from his list.

The trainer, known as Cherry Hoggs on TikTok, specialises in off-leash pack walks and behaviour modification. He uses his platform to educate owners about their pets.

In one of his videos, which has garnered over 123,000 likes, he revealed the breeds he finds most challenging to train. Pointing to a basset hound, he said: “Number one – these things, this pterodactyl. She was actually the easiest basset hound we’ve ever had and I adore her. However, they’re awful to train. They’re so stubborn.”

He placed beagles in second place, advising owners to “just give up” as they can be just as stubborn as basset hounds. He explained: “They are just the hardest dogs to train. Put them on a 200-acre piece of land on a farm, perfect dog. But apart from that awful.”

Grouping several breeds together for third place, he mentioned that small dogs can be particularly difficult to train. He added: “The most aggressive, stubborn, hard to train are the little dogs. Why is that? Because the owners always baby these dogs.”

“So as soon as they give them to us, guess what happens. They throw their toys out of the pram. They’re not going to take no for an answer.” He then listed off the best dogs to train, including pitbulls, bulldogs, rottweilers, and German shepherds.

Commenting on his post, one user said: “My husky is laughing at this list right now.” Another chipped in: “The trick with basset hounds is to just not ask them to do anything they don’t want to do.” A third wrote: “Nine years with our beagle from pup and the first eight years were the hardest.”

Yet another added their experience, saying: “Going on 18 years with my bassett. He’s so stubborn I think even the reaper gave up. Love him though.” And one more weighed in: “Dogs aren’t hard to train. It’s the owners.”
