A health guru has highlighted the daily consumption of chia seeds, claiming it can supercharge your body in numerous ways.
Health Hub (@healthhub.bz), a regular promoter of natural ingredients on TikTok, explains how food can positively affect both your body and mind. “If you eat chia seeds every day for two weeks, this is what will happen to your body,” they kick off in a fresh video.
Within 24 hours, your energy levels will “skyrocket”, according to Health Hub, as the seeds start to absorb up to “absorb up to 12 times their weight in water”, gradually releasing it into your system. “By day three, the high fibre content and omega-3 fatty acids will rapidly lower your risk of heart disease,” they continue, whilst suggesting that after a week you’ll begin to see “reduced belly fat” as the seeds encourage healthy fat metabolism.
And by the second week, they claim: “You could see perfect glowing skin thanks to the hydration and antioxidants present in chia seeds.” One hopeful TikTok user responded: “I’m going to start chia seeds tomorrow. Remind me in two weeks how it went.”
“Love them and eat them every day,” another person chimed in. A third added: “I recommend yoghurt and seeds, with water it doesn’t taste that good.”
Healthline, meanwhile, has suggested that a daily intake of 28g (about 2-3 tablespoons) of chia seeds is beneficial, noting: “Limited research in animals and humans has found that taking chia seeds daily can lead to greater weight loss and bone mineral content. That said, eating too many can cause some side effects, so start with a small dose and make sure to drink plenty of water.”
The site concurs with Health Hub, confirming: “Chia seeds are not only rich in minerals, omega-3 fat, antioxidants, and fibre but also easy to prepare. Studies suggest chia seeds have various health benefits, ranging from weight loss to a reduced risk of heart disease. However, more research involving humans is needed before any firm conclusions can be made.
“If you want to reap the possible benefits of chia seeds, consider incorporating them into your diet. They’re a great addition to smoothies, oatmeal, yogurt, baked goods, and more.”
Echoing Health Hub’s energy-boosting claims, Chatelaine magazine states: “Chia seeds are a source of amazing long-term energy, which over time can actually help your body to function at its best and burn more calories throughout the day. Chia also contains a high source of omega-3 fatty acids, similar to flax. Be sure to get dark greyish chia, as it’s nutritionally superior to the lighter kind.”
And while some TikTok users expressed doubt over the skin benefits of chia seeds, WebMD confirms the insights from Health Hub to an extent, noting, “In one study, chia seed extract was found to have a high level of vitamin F, which plays a role in improving skin function and hydration. Another study found that chia seeds can help to improve overall skin health by protecting against certain enzymes related to aging. More research is needed.”
The website cautions though, that on the rare occasion, allergic reactions to chia seeds occur. “Symptoms to watch out for include vomiting, diarrhoea, and itching of the tongue or lips,” it states. “Severe allergies can lead to anaphylaxis – a severe allergic reaction that can lead to death if not treated quickly.”
