Glasgow’s five “happiest places to live” have been revealed.
Scotland’s largest city offers many different areas to settle down. Whether you are looking to be close to the action in the city centre, or have more green space in one of its many suburbs, there is something for everyone.
As reported by Glasgow Live, a new survey conducted by online retailer Furniturebox has named the five places in Glasgow where residents are the happiest. The poll asked 5,000 people about their contentment levels in major UK cities.
According to the results, Newton Mearns in East Renfrewshire has come out on top. The affluent suburb is located just seven miles from the city centre.
Newton Mearns is the biggest settlement in East Renfrewshire, with around 28,000 residents. It is home to The Avenue Shopping Centre, as well as numerous green spaces such as Broom Park, Shawwood Park, and Crookfur Park.
According to the experts, the criteria for happiness included the beauty of local surroundings and greenery, availability of reputable state schools, and affordable housing. The presence of quality pubs, restaurants, independent shops, and cultural attractions was also considered.
A spokesperson for Furniturebox commented: “Newton Mearns is the happiest place to live in Glasgow. All 70 places on the list would have been worthy winners and show why the UK is such a wonderful place to live, loved by visitors from all over the world.
“Most of the locations in the top 70 are not the most affluent in their localities and have access to some affordable housing. The survey shows that the happiest places are not defined by wealth but by the quality of life within them.”
Despite this, Newton Mearns is one of Scotland’s priciest areas for property. Homes average £421,000 on Rightmove, surpassed only by St Andrews and Bearsden.
Following Newton Mearns, Dennistoun was named the second happiest area in Glasgow. Meanwhile, Merchant City, Hillhead, and Scotstoun round out the top five.
As reported by the Daily Record, Furniturebox also revealed the happiest places in the whole o Scotland to live. More information can be found on the Furniturebox website.
