With Halloween already feeling like a distant memory, we are now firmly entering the festive season.
We may still have weeks to go until Christmas Day itself, but people across Scotland are already getting into the spirit of the holiday. As we enter the midpoint of November, prepare for festive markets and Christmas light switch-ons all over the country.
For some Scots, the best part of Christmastime is the winter light trails. From Edinburgh to Aberdeenshire, special festive light attractions will be taking place in every corner of Scotland.

Christmas at the Botanics
When: November 21-December 30
Where: Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh
One of the most popular and acclaimed light trails in Scotland will be taking place at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh, with Christmas at the Botanics featuring everything from flickering candles and “batons of colour-changing light” to Santa Claus himself. While walking around the magical grounds, you will also be able to pick up tasty festive snacks such as hot chocolate and toasted marshmallows.

Castle of Light
When: Various dates between November 22 and January 4
Where: Edinburgh Castle
Edinburgh Castle might not be the first place you would think of for a festive light trail, but Castle of Light is sure to take your breath away. With a variety of immersive displays, interactive installations, and street food to chow down on, it is an amazing way to learn more about Edinburgh’s history while seeing the iconic attraction in a whole new light.

Monteviot Lights
When: December 6-22
Where: Monteviot House and Gardens
Once again, Monteviot Lights will return to Monteviot House and Gardens near Jedburgh in the Scottish Borders. Visitors will be able to walk along an illuminated path through the grounds after dark, where gorgeous light displays will spotlight their natural beauty.

Five Sisters Zoo Illuminations
When: November 15-December 23
Where: Five Sister Zoo
Five Sisters Zoo in East Lothian will once again be putting on its dazzling winter light trail, teaming up with lighting experts Blachere for Five Sisters Zoo Illuminations. With the attraction promising the 2024 edition will be its “best display to date”, expect thousands of lights and Christmas decorations, festive stalls, and even a chance to meet Santa Claus.

Aberdeen Christmas Light-up Trail
When: November 14-December 31
Where: Duthie Park Winter Gardens
Aberdeen’s new Christmas Light-up Trail will see 12 light features located across the city centre, and you will be able to discover them all while taking some fabulous Christmas selfies. Each light feature will be made in collaboration with a local charity, with visitors able to scan QR codes to learn more about them.

Starry Nights at Dean Castle
When: December 13-23
Where: Dean Castle
Once again, Dean Castle Country Park in Kilmarnock will be hosting its magical Starry Nights illuminated Christmas extravaganza. The festival will include “festive lights, lasers and captivating festive sound installations”, as well as a Santa’s Grotto Experience.

Starry Nights at Beecraigs Country Park
When: December 13-23
Where: Beecraigs Country Park
Starry Nights will also take place at Beecraigs Country Park in West Lothian, around two miles south of Linlithgow. Among the dazzling light installations along the trail will be a ‘Starry Night’ tunnel, a ‘Christmas Campfire’, and even an appearance from the Grinch.
