Concerned Ally McCoist insists he doesn’t care if a referee supports Rangers or Celtic as he backed the “integrity” of officials.
And the Ibrox icon reckons that it’s a problem to start questioning the motives of the whistlers amid the fallout from the David Coote controversy. The Premier League referee has been suspended by the PGMOL and is subject to an investigation after a video surfaced online of Coote branding Jurgen Klopp a ‘German c***’ in an X-rated rant about Liverpool as he branded the performance by the club ‘s***’ in a foul-mouthed rant.
The leaked clip has sparked debate over Coote’s previous involvement in game involving the Anfield club – but McCoist has moved to end the debate by insisting it wouldn’t matter to him if the referees north of the border had an affinity for either of the Glasgow giants. Asked if it should matter who a referee supports in terms of integrity by Andy Townsend on the talkSPORT Breakfast Show, McCoist said: “I don’t think it’s important.
“Let’s take it north of the border, you would suggest that there would be numerous officials either supporting Rangers or Celtic, as they are the two biggest clubs in the country. I don’t have a problem with it.
“It wouldn’t interest me who they support. If they wanted to tell you who they supported or asked who they supported, and they told you. I wouldn’t have a problem with it. Once you start questioning the integrity, honesty and decision-making of the officials, that’s where you have a problem.”
