Scotland’s best fish and chip shops have been named at a prestigious award ceremony.
On Monday, the annual Scottish Fish and Chip Awards took place in Glasgow. The ceremony celebrated the top chippies and takeaways in the country across a range of categories.
As part of the Scottish Fish and Chip Awards, the top fish and chip shops in each region of Scotland received a prize. Meanwhile, the best fish suppers in every part of the country were also awarded.
The Best Chip Shop awards for the South, East, North, West, and Central regions went to Alfonso’s in Earlston, East Coast Eateries in Musselburgh, Frankie’s Fish and Chips in Shetland, The Kraken Chippy in East Kilbride, and Vincenzo’s Fish and Chips in Stirling. Meanwhile, the top gongs for Best Chip Shop (North-East), Best Chip Shop (Ayrshire), and Best Chip Shop (North-West) went to McKays Fish & Chip Shop in Pitlochry, The Principal Cafe in Galston, and The Seaforth in Ullapool respectively.
Meanwhile, Best Fish Supper (North) was awarded to Highland Haddy in Thurso, Best Fish Supper (East) went to The Wee Chippy in Anstruther, Tony’s Shawhead in Coatbridge took home Best Fish Supper (West), Best Fish Supper (North) was given to Highland Haddy in Thurso, and Vincenzo’s Fish and Chips in Stirling received Best Fish Supper (Central). Rounding out the top winners are Barassie Chippy in Troon for Best Fish Supper (Ayrshire), Carron Fish Bar in Stonehaven for Best Fish Supper (North-East), and Deli-Ca-Sea Fish and Chip Shop in Ullapool for Best Fish Supper (North-West).
Among the other winners at the Scottish Fish and Chip Awards were Hayston Golf Club in Kirkintilloch and Valerios Fish & Chips in Lanark, which were awarded Best Fish Tea and Best Customer Service respectively. Meanwhile, The Angry Seagull Fish & Chips in Inverness took home the gong for Best Mobile Fish & Chips and Berties in Edinburgh won Best Dine in Restaurant.
To decide the winners, the chippies were assessed by a panel of experts that included award-winning cook Aldo Zilli. The nominees also went through a public vote.
Organiser Warren Paul commented: “Each year we celebrate the very best in what has always been the classic takeaway – fish and chips. We bring together entrants from all over Scotland showcasing people who are really trying to offer quality – using great ingredients and really going the extra mile to give the very best food to their customers.
“We look at fish and chip shops in tiny villages and big cities and send judges to every single one that enters – whether that’s two minutes from the office or on an island hours away by ferry. We have strict criteria across all judging to ensure it is fair and consistent, so we’re confident our winners really are doing it better than anyone else.
“A win or highly recommended nod from us is a seal of approval you can trust – there’s a reason our winners are so successful every year after the awards. Try for yourself and let us know what you think.”
