MERCER COUNTY, W.Va. – The Mercer County Animal Shelter may be getting some cosmetic upgrades in the near future.
Concerns about the shelter‘s status were brought up during Tuesday’s Mercer County Commission meeting. The shelter’s director, Stacey Harman is hoping to get funding from the commission to fix up the shelter.
Harman says the building is in need of some minor repairs to areas of the shelter. That includes the visitation area, kennel floors and the building’s roof.
Harman says excited dogs while visiting with potential adopters have torn up a wall in the visiting area down to the insulation in some spots. Some pieces of tiles in walkways are peeling and some kennel floors are cracking.
“It just basically needs a new facelift. There‘s a lot of cracks and stuff that are starting to show up. Some of our floors are starting to come up in the kennel area. We’re looking at trying to replace some of that,” said Harman.
Harman says the areas in need of repair are minor and won’t affect day to day operations. However, she says having the areas repaired would go a long way towards keeping animals safe and making the building look good for the public and potential adopters.
Mercer County Commissioner Greg Puckett says the county would be open to helping with improvements. He asked Harman to bring in a monetary cost for how much the project will cost before they decide to pitch in.
