(CNN) – Scientists have discovered an underwater volcano-like feature during Coast Guard-assisted operations off of Alaska.
The U.S. Coast Guard cutter called Healy just finished the first two phases of the icebreaker’s 2024 arctic fall deployment Sunday.
Its crew and researchers did multiple scientific and seafloor-mapping missions.
The Coast Guard said their work led to the discovery of what’s described as a sub-sea volcano-like feature during the first phase.
The feature, rising 500 meters from the seabed, is approximately 1,600 meters below the surface at its shallowest depth.
The team later found a possible gas plume rising from just about that feature to near the water’s surface.
