If you’re aiming to turn back the clock with your appearance, makeup could be your golden ticket to a more youthful-looking complexion.
Swapping out your foundation or reshaping your brows might be quick fixes, but one particular makeup artist insists that eyeliner can have a “dramatic” impact on older women.
Beauty guru Nikol Johnson, who specialises in makeup tips for the older generation, disclosed an eyeliner technique that she claims can make mature ladies appear much younger, as reported by the Express.
In a tutorial first posted on YouTube in October 2023, she shares: “I’m teaching you this little sneaky trick that I don’t think you know about, that is going to be a big game changer for women over 50.”
The trick left her looking barely made up at all, yet it miraculously enhanced her eyes to give them a sparkle—and it was done in mere moments.
In the video, she starts with a touch of eyeshadow, opting for a nude powder pigment to lighten her lids before choosing a matte plum-purple shade to line the upper lash line subtly with a smudge brush, extending just past the outer edge to create a miniature wing.
Nikol demonstrates: “So basically what I want to do is keep this eyelid light and then give the drama with my shadow, pretending to be my liner. But it’s not, we’ll go back over with our liner.”
A beauty guru has shared her top tips for achieving a youthful look with eyeliner, suggesting that starting with shades from the chocolate brown and plum purple spectrum is key, while advising against stark black. The expert, Nikol, swears by a second layer using a deep purple kohl pencil to make eyes pop.
She pointed out that many mature women face a common issue where a visible strip of skin disrupts the eyeliner’s effect. In her tutorial, Nikol explained: “What I would see when I’d be on location doing makeup on mature women is some of the ladies eyes would have a clear inner line between their eyelid and actual lash line.”
She continued: “It would be this real prominent flesh colour between all the beautiful darkness on the eye where the eyeliner is in the shadow. But it would be really highlighted having the nude colour under the lashes. So what I always would do – and it made a dramatic difference, is take the pencil and tightline it.”
This technique involves carefully applying eyeliner to the inner lash line to blend the natural flesh tone with the makeup, creating a seamless and fuller lash appearance.
Nikol concluded that this method allows the eyes to “completely come together” for a more natural-looking eyeliner application.
While some beauty enthusiasts may already be using this trick on their lower lash line, the beauty guru has cautioned mature women against it as it could make the eyes appear smaller. The aim is to achieve a look that’s both elongated and wide.
