BLUEFIELD, W.Va. -Bluefield State University is partnering with the City of Bluefield to recognize community members who have either directly or indirectly impacted the lives of those in the area.
A community award will be given in honor of George Smalls and Herbs Sims for their community achievement and service.
Last year, the partners created thirty banners to hang on the streets of Bluefield and now they’re looking to make it a tradition.
An Adjunct faculty member for the university says taking steps to make sure these community members are recognized is such an important step to take.
“We want to educate our community on who their neighbors are. You know, our country is built on hope and brotherly love, and I think having a program like this to help you know who your neighbors are, who’s in your community that’s made a difference that you may not even know about is very important not only for the community at large, but definitely for our youth,” said Gabrielle Ponders.
The City of Bluefield Board of Directors District One representing district one says this is to help spread a light on those who make the community better.
“Representation matters and during Black History Month, it’s good to see people being recognized for their achievement because we live in such a polarized age to where achievements are trying to get buried or just ignored. It’s good to recognize the people who have laid the groundwork and who are laying the groundwork to make this community better,” said Treyvon Simmons, City of Bluefield Board of Directors District One.
Nominations can still be submitted until December 11th on the BSU website by searching Black History Banners.
