The UK’s “most festive” towns and cities for 2024 have been revealed, with a Scottish city taking the top spot. If you’re after a cosy atmosphere and attractions to get you in the Christmas mood, Inverness is your go-to place.

A study by GO Outdoors ranked locations across the UK based on factors such as the average number of snow days, the average duration of Christmas markets and the number of pubs. Inverness clinched first place thanks to its snug pubs, many of which offer traditional food and drink by open fires.

The high likelihood of snowfall around Christmas was another winning factor. According to the research, Inverness experiences an average of 27.1 snow days a year, making it ideal for a white Christmas experience. The city’s top winter attractions include the Brodie Illuminated light show and seasonal markets that sell local handmade gifts and festive treats.

Aside from Christmas, Inverness is also a “beautiful” destination for a winter staycation. Tucked away in the Scottish highlands, this lively spot offers the best of both worlds, whether you’re a nature lover or you prefer the hustle and bustle of city life.

Often considered a gateway to the picturesque North Coast 500 route or the Isle of Skye, Inverness is renowned for its rugged coastline and Instagram-worthy scenery, reports the Mirror.

Inverness Castle, perched on a hilltop with stunning views over the city and river, is a must-see in the city centre. Another iconic attraction is Loch Ness, a vast loch renowned for its legendary monster.

The food and drink scene is also noteworthy, with Inverness previously recognised as one of the UK’s most affordable cities for a pint.

Glasgow secured second place for those seeking a festive getaway, thanks to its numerous Christmas attractions. The city is not only known for its George Square Christmas Lights Switch On but also boasts Christmas markets open for an impressive 58 days – more than any other city.

Additionally, with 44 local walking trails and 58 cabins within 30 miles, visitors can easily combine festive shopping with picturesque outdoor adventures.

Edinburgh, another Scottish city, completes the top three due to its 64 nearby walking trails, including the Arthur’s Seat and Salisbury Crags loop from Holyrood, and 50 days of Christmas markets.

Brighton and Hove, Nottingham and Manchester also made the list of the UK’s most festive cities, along with Dundee and Cambridge in the top 10.
