BECKLEY, W. Va. -As we near Thanksgiving, the Salvation Army in Beckley is getting into the spirit of giving with a new food giveaway. Based on the need they see other times of the year, the Beckley Salvation Army held an event Friday to help locals in need celebrate this holiday of gratitude.
They had enough boxes filled with classic Thanksgiving food like stuffing, green beans, and, of course, turkey to give Thanksgiving meals to one hundred and twenty families. We spoke with one Salvation Army leader here who says there is a great need for food assistance in the Beckley area, a need that they help fill.
“…We get clients every single day looking for a meal, food that they can take home and cook, food that they can eat without even cooking, so I would say that this is a great need that is here in Beckley, West Virginia,” says Lt. Arkadia Bottenfield, with the Beckley Salvation Army.
Bottenfield says they are always looking for volunteers and donations, including for their “Angel Tree” program that helps give Christmas presents to kids who otherwise might go without. She says those interested in helping out can find more information on their website or by giving them a call at 304-253-9541.
