A murder investigation has been launched after a young woman’s body was discovered in the boot of a car near the Essex border.
Northamptonshire Police initiated the probe following concerns for the welfare of a 24-year-old woman from Corby on November 13. The grim discovery was made by Metropolitan Police officers, acting on information from their Northamptonshire counterparts. The park near Brisbane Road was cordoned off as forensic teams examined the area around the vehicle, reports the Mirror.
The Met Police confirmed they were alerted about the missing woman earlier this month. The Mirror has reached out to both the Met and Northamptonshire police for comment.
A spokesperson for the Met told The Sun: “Shortly after midnight on the morning of Thursday, 14 November, the Met was contacted by officers from Northamptonshire Police raising concerns for the welfare of a woman who was believed to be in a car in the east London area.
“The car was located parked in Brisbane Road, Ilford and the body of a 24-year-old woman was found inside the vehicle. Her death is being treated as suspicious.”
As of Saturday afternoon, no arrests have been made and the investigation into the death continues. Post mortem examination results are yet to be released.
The spokesperson further told The Sun: “We continue to liaise with colleagues from Northamptonshire Police and at this time this is being treated as an isolated incident.”
Northamptonshire Police superintendent Steve Freeman announced: “Fast-track enquiries were made which sadly led to the discovery of a woman’s body inside the boot of a vehicle in the Ilford area of London. We are treating the death as suspicious and a murder investigation has been launched.
“Detectives from the East Midlands Special Operations Unit Major Crime Team and the Metropolitan Police have been working at pace to establish the circumstances that led to the woman’s death. The investigation is ongoing and there will be continued police activity over the weekend in various locations, including Corby and Ilford.
“Although we believe that this was a targeted incident and there is no wider risk to members of the public, extra patrols will be taking place in Corby in the coming days for reassurance purposes.”
