A bungling thief who gashed his arm on glass during a reptile robbery at an animal charity has been caged.
Michael Hesketh, 39, inflicted considerable damage on Pets Corner in Chorley, Lancs. , before making off with Lizzie the gecko. To break into the establishment, which cares for creatures ranging from rabbits to chipmunks, he dismounted the door handle and tore it open.
Hesketh cashed in on the pilfered lizard for £20, however, the pet was subsequently recovered in good health by the authorities and returned to the charity. As he made his getaway on October 16, Hesketh wounded himself on a shard of glass, a mishap that ultimately led police to him.
The Chorley man pled guilty to burglary at Preston Magistrates’ Court and was slapped with a six-month prison term on November 5, which will run back-to-back with another six months for the attempted burglary of Chorley’s United Reform Church.
In response to the case, a Lancashire Police spokesperson commented: “Hesketh didn’t just steal items – he stole a living animal from a place whose aim is to bring joy to residents. We are thankful that Lizzie was re-united safe and well and is able to continue to provide special memories to those who come to visit her. Hesketh has been sent to prison for what he has done.
“We hope that this sends a message to anyone who thinks actions like this are acceptable: we will find you, and we will bring you to justice.”
