A Lanarkshire woman celebrating being cancer-free for 10 years has shared her inspirational story as part of a charity’s festive programme.

Beatson Cancer Charity is “proud” to be launching its Bauble Appeal this Christmas, ensuring more cancer patients and their families receive the support they need.

Kirstie Storrie, 43, has recently marked a decade of being free from cancer after being diagnosed with thyroid cancer.

Kirstie’s relationship with Beatson Cancer Charity continues to be strong, as she remains involved in their work, particularly through raising awareness and funds.

In addition to her personal milestone, Kirstie has been a advocate for others facing cancer.

She supported her mother through breast and ovarian cancer diagnoses and the loss of her sister-in-law, Jordanna, to ovarian cancer.

To mark her 10-year milestone, Kirstie participated in the Great Scottish Run’s 10k, raising funds for Beatson Cancer Charity.

Her personal journey has motivated her to give back to the charity that helped her, and she continues to inspire others.

Kirstie’s story is a special part of Beatson Cancer Charity’s 10th anniversary celebrations this year.

She encourages people to support the appeal to help others who are going through cancer treatment.

Kirstie told Lanarkshire Live: “Eleven years ago I found a lump on my neck. I then had an operation to remove the lump and half of my thyroid out.

“Once the doctors discovered it was cancer, I then had a second operation to remove my thyroid fully and received my treatment at the Beatson.”

She added: “The Beatson Cancer Charity have most recently supported my mum. Over the last year, my mum was diagnosed with ovarian and breast cancer.

“My sister-in-law was also diagnosed with ovarian cancer a couple of years ago.

“She had fundraised for the charity because she was helped by them as well.

“Unfortunately, she was only 28 when she passed away in March.

“Beatson Cancer Charity have had an impact on my life significantly over the years.

“When I counted through my family members, there is myself, my gran and papa who have all been helped, and, most recently, my mum, sister-in-law and a few friends.

“So, I have visited many people in the Beatson. They have been a constant in my life, even before my diagnosis.

“If I had to describe Beatson Cancer Charity, I would say hopeful, encouraging and supportive.”

Everyone has their own reason to hang a Beatson Bauble. It may be to remember someone special, or perhaps you would like to thank the staff at the Beatson or give hope to patients.

By donating to the appeal you will continue “to provide care, love and hope to families this festive season and beyond”.

Everyone who donates will receive two baubles in the post – one to hang on their own tree at home, and one to send back to be hung on the Beatson tree.

Rachel Mullin, individual giving officer at Beatson Cancer Charity, said: “We are so pleased to be launching our Bauble Appeal again this year.

“Kirstie has first-hand experience of the Beatson and the difference our charity’s services make to patients, and we’re so grateful to her for sharing his story.

“We’d be delighted if you could support Beatson Cancer Charity this Christmas so we can continue to be there for patients and families across the west of Scotland.”
