Steven Naismith was tapped up for a career change just days after he was sacked by Hearts… by an opportunistic postman.
The 38-year-old bit the bullet in September after a desperately poor start to the season saw them draw with Rangers then lose eight on the spin, crashing out of the Premier Sports Cup to Falkirk and dropping out of Europa League qualifying along the way. He’d been in charge since April 2023, first interim and then permanently before falling on his sword.
Neil Critchley has since picked up the pieces and Naismith has enjoyed some downtime as he considers his next move. But he had an offer to go straight back into work – and it came from his postman. Naismith was asked on BBC Off the Ball if he’s had any offers and the former Scotland striker said: “I may as well tell the story about the postman coming a couple of days after I got sacked…
“My postman came after I lost my job. When I answered the door to take the parcel he said ‘We’re hiring over Christmas, we need drivers.’ I thought he was joking but he said, ‘No seriously just let me know if you want a form.’”
He didn’t take him up on it in the end, saying he’s been in no rush to get back in the saddle. “I’ve enjoyed the time off,” Naismith said. “I went on holiday, I baked some bread and I have played some paddle. When I have not been working I have been sitting thinking ‘What am I going to do?’ There was a bread making class somewhere down Ayrshire way so I went to it with my missus. I have managed to do loads of stuff that I wanted to.”
