AUSTIN, Texas — Many local patients treated here in Central Texas rely on We Are Blood.
200 blood donations are needed everyday to accommodate the regional demands. With four donor centers and five mobile drive buses, We Are Blood relies heavily on volunteers.
Tim Holland is one of the center’s transportation specialists. He’s been donating at We Are Blood for awhile now.
After he retired, Holland decided to become a driver for them, as well. He says he never knew what happens once you make a donation. Now Holland is part of the process, making pickups across most of Hays County.
“We pick up blood which is stored in coolers. And we go to the different satellite locations. We’re at one here which is South Austin. Cedar Park is another one,” Holland said.
“And we have to secure it in the back of the van. We don’t want it moving around and blood coming out of the coolers. So yeah, it is precious cargo and we treat it that way.”
Holland volunteers as a driver three to four times a week and says the need for donations and pickups never stops. We Are Blood provides volunteer opportunities seven days a week. You can pick which times work best for you.
