Barry Ferguson doesn’t like to hear Connor Goldson talking negatively about past Rangers managers and insists the Ibrox club were right to see him.
In an exclusive interview with MailSport,Goldson shared his regret that the Light Blues failed to build on their 2021 Scottish Premiership title win, with Celtic going on to dominate since. The former Gers defender reckons the club has “never been the same since” Steven Gerrard left, despite winning the Scottish Cup and reaching the Europa League Final under Gio van Bronckhorst.
But Ferguson wasn’t keen on hearing his former teammate Van Bronckhorst talked about in that way, and believes that Goldson should have actually left Rangers in summer 2022 when he was a surprise new handed a four-year deal, rather than last summer, when he departed for Cypriot outfit Aris Limassol. Goldson wanted to remain in Govan, feeling he had plenty more to offer but that a senior club figure wanted him out of the door – and it wasn’t Philippe Clement.
And while Ferguson couldn’t doubt Goldson’s commitment, he went to bat for the Dutchman. he told Go Radio: “I don’t like hearing that. I thought Gio [Van Bronckhorst] done a fine job. Rangers were maybe too quick in getting rid of Gio if I’m being honest.
“Steven Gerrard obviously brought the title back to the club, then moved on to Aston Villa and Gio come in and Gio had a style of play. I thought Gio done a fine job. He just had a few iffy results towards the end of his time at Rangers.
“At that time, Connor had signed a new contract, but personally, I thought it was the right time for Connor to go. I thought that he was a really good player for Rangers but it was time for him to move on.
“What I will say is that for the previous six years, he was one guy that did put his body on the line. I will give him that. I’m sure at times he says he could’ve played better but every time Connor Goldson gave you 100 per cent.
“When it came to the summer and he left, I just thought it was the right move for both Rangers and Connor.”
