BECKLEY, W.Va. – The Fayette County Prosecuting Attorney, Anthony Ciliberti Jr., said an inmate was found guilty of possessing a controlled substance.

Ciliberti said back in February, 63-year-old Shannon D. Carte was temporarily placed in a holding cell while waiting for a hearing in Circuit Court. The Transport Officer noticed Carte acting suspicious inside the cell, and Ciliberti said Deputies reviewed video surveillance. After reviewing the tap, Ciliberti said they confirmed Carte had contraband inside the holding cell.

Deputies removed around seven grams of methamphetamine from the cell, some of which was found in Carte’s lunch bag, Ciliberti said.

Carte was convicted of the felony offense of possession of methamphetamine by an inmate of a correctional facility and convicted of the misdemeanor offense of possession of methamphetamine after a one-day jury trial.

Carte is facing a one to five year sentence for the felony conviction and a ninety day to six month sentence for the misdemeanor.
