City leaders say Kyle is the second fastest-growing city in the country.

KYLE, Texas — Kyle is one of the fastest-growing cities in the country.

With plans for a new hospital, convention center and thousands of homes, Kyle is only expected to get a lot busier.

Kyle has grown from a population of 5,000 in 200 to more than 58,000 people, That includes a 9% growth in just the last year.

“Everything we are doing to plan so we can build a better community for our residents,” said Kyle’s economic development director, Victoria Vargas.

The biggest plans are in what’s called the Lake Park District, which will include 2,000 new housing units. Vargas said it will be multifamily units spread throughout the development.

“Some will be part of a mixed-use [development]. You’ll have commercial on the bottom, residential up top,” Vargas said. “Some of them may be free-standing … it could be a mixture of townhomes.”

Plans also call for a second hospital in the city that will have an emergency room, along with a new convention center.

Julie Albertson, who’s owned the Texas Pie Company for 25 years, said she knows Kyle well. She remembers when there were only a couple of businesses downtown.

“Over the last 25 years in business we have seen go from a backwater little bitty town to one of the largest growing cities in the nation,” said Albertson.

However, Albertson said business has been good and welcomes the growth.

Meanwhile, Vargas said they have been preparing for the new development by working with its water supplier, Alliance Water, to make sure they have enough water. City leaders say they’re building a new water tower and putting in new piping to make sure water gets to Kyle.

The city is also working on 13 road projects to keep up with the traffic demand.
